The Chincoteague Pony Swim is an American Tradition that began more than 175 years ago. Visitors from all over come to Chincoteague Island in the last week of July each year to watch the Saltwater Cowboys herd their equine charges out of the National Wildlife Refuge at low tide and swim them across the Assateague Channel to be penned. This is only one event of many that has made Chincoteague famous as a favorite American family vacation destination.
